City of Champaign Racial Distribution
Home to the University of Illinois, Champaign prides itself on being a racially and ethnically diverse city that attracts people from all over the world. Still, Champaign has its fair share of segregated neighborhoods. This map uses 2020 U.S. census block data that shows most blocks have a racial majority. While most blocks have a small racial majority (i.e. 50%-60% white or black), many blocks such as those in Clark Park and Douglass Park have high black racial majorities.
Furthermore, the university’s high enrollment of Asian students is clearly depicted in Campustown, with most of the blocks in the Campustown neighborhood North of Green Street showing Asian majorities.
Lastly, the blocks that have no racial majorities are often found most commonly in majority minority neighborhoods that have a mix of Latino and Black residents. These neighborhoods include Garden Hills and Beardsley Park. Some blocks in Campustown also have no clear racial majorities.
